Probonas, Naxos, Aegean Islands

In 1915, Dimitris Promponas decided to produce and bottle the local ‘Naxos Citron’ liqueur. Dimitris’ small company was eventually passed down to his son and daughter-in-law, Stamatis and Sofia. With restless spirit and passion the couple added a winery to the business in 1978, expanded their range of liqueurs, and began producing jars of traditional, preserved spoon sweets. Today, their daughters Katerina and Lina continue the family legacy, putting their personal twist on generation-long traditions. Probonas liqueur is made using only hand-picked fruits and the leaves from citron trees, as well as the traditional methods of distillation, which preserve the original flavour and taste of the island’s local drink.
