Magoutes Rosé Xinomavro-Moshomavro

Magoutes Vineyard is located at 800 metres above sea level in the inhospitable region of Siatista in Macedonia. The rosé is a blend of 80% Xinomavro and 20% of the über rare Moschomavro (meaning black Muscat), grown almost exclusively by Dimitri Diamantis. This is a classic case of the vineyard holding sway over the wine making, thanks to Dimitri's very low intervention methods. Spontaneous fermentation, racking off skins and then left in old barrels to finish. Delicate, partridge eye colour, subtly aromatic bouquet with hints of redcurrants and [italics]fraises de bois[/italics], the flavours are wonderfully fruity within a structured core of zingy acidity. Only 11.5% alcohol.

Type: Dry Rosé
Varietal Composition: Xinomavro, Moshomavro
Region: PGI Siatista, Macedonia

Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans

Magoutes, Siatista, Macedonia

Although famous for its wines in the nineteenth century, the Siatista wine region in the north of Greece is now remote and relatively unknown. Magoutes Vineyard, previously know as Diamantis Winery, was established by the local Diamantis family with a focus on producing terroir-driven wines from indigenous varieties. Their work has concentrated on rescuing many abandoned old vineyards, as well as planting new vineyards from local cuttings in order to preserve the unique varietal and clonal heritage. They have identified the 'Magoutes' area as an outstanding terroir consisting of rocky, limestone soil at high altitude, a steep gradient and southerly aspect, where they now have over 12ha of vineyards. Alongside Xinomavro, Dimitris Diamantis specialises in the Moshomavro grape, which is indigenous to Siatista, but had almost died out by the 1970s. The grape typically boasts light tannins and moderate acidity and was until recently mostly used to enhance other varieties, such as Xinomavro. Diamantis is currently the only producer to make a 100% Moshomavro wine. Magoutes practice low intervention in both the vineyard and the winery, producing wines of remarkable purity.
