Akritos Hidiriotiko

Akritos (unadulterated) was set up in 2020 in Revma in Western Lesvos. It is the dream of Nikolaos Kapetanellis to work with local varieties. Planted in volcanic mountainous vineyards, the Chidiriotiko grapes are harvested in late afternoon and then, after cooling, fermented in stainless steel and left to settle and mature for 12 months, and then bottled and left for a further three months. 'Unique' to Lesvos, this intense red has complex citrus aromas, with delightful tobacco, chocolate flavours and refreshing acidity. It is extraordinary. It's like Pinot Noir in texture and character, phenomenal concentration of flavour and yet so delicate.

Akritos Oinos, Lesvos, Aegean Islands

Akritos Oinos is a new, small winery based on the island of Lesvos, put together by a team of young local winemakers and vine growers. Their aim was to make wine 'the old way', what is now called low-intervention, using open top-fermenters and with no additions, apart from a small amount of sulphur before bottling. Based in-between the villages of Vatousa and Hidira,  the team renovated an old building by the village square preserving the original characteristics and natural water well flowing from the building’s foundations. The focus has been the ancient variety of Hidiriotiko, cultivated at an altitude of some 220m to 245m above sea level. The distance from the sea and the altitude, create a microenvironment predominantly Mediterranean but with continental characteristics. Lesvos is partly volcanic and the vineyard is located in the caldera, giving the wine its complexity and minerality. Their first vintage was in 2020.
